According to Paul Dawson (2013), contemporary fiction is characterized by the “rise of the omniscient narrator,” a narrative technique traditionally associated with 18th and 19th century fiction. We will explore the theoretical debates surrounding the concept which has been defined as a trope, a specific kind of narratorial performance or a quality of narrative knowledge. This will allow us to analyse well-known instances of omniscient narration: Henry Fielding’s Tom Jones (1749), William Thackeray’s Vanity Fair (1847/48) and Nicola Barker’s Darkmans (2007).
This seminar is open to students who are familiar with the foundations of narrative theory and are interested in the history of the novel. Needless to say, you should also enjoy a long read.
