As Susan Cahill has stated recently in an article in LIT, "The figure of the girl has a long history of carrying and symbolizing social anxiety, particularly when that anxiety circulates around questions of consumerism, modernity, and sexuality—and this figuration becomes especially potent when these anxieties intersect." (28.2 [2017]: 154). In this seminar we will analyse and interpret the narrative poetics and politics of the depiction of teenage girls and young female adults in contemporary Irish and Northern Irish novels.
