During the first half of the nineteenth century, an expanding literary market provided new vocational opportunities for women as well as increasing financial opportunities for authors. However, dichotomous conceptualizations of gender not only sought to prescribe women's position within American society, but were also projected onto their writing. Such stereotypes were often accompanied by a depreciation of women's literary output that shaped critical responses to nineteenth-century women's writing until well into the twentieth century. Female writers who did not fit neatly into the Anglo-American mainstream faced additional difficulties in establishing themselves as writers and were often subject to marginalization.
And yet, the field of literary production also provided women of different social and ethnic origins with the opportunity to challenge binary logics and stereotypes. In this seminar, we will discuss the contributions of nineteenth-century American women writers to U.S. American literature by placing them within national and transnational literary movements and genres as well as the social and cultural contexts of their writing, including the race, class, and gender discourses of their time.
