This is a seminar for BA-students only.
The participants in this seminar will be introduced to concepts related to the grammatical categories tense and aspect and ideas for their analysis that go beyond what is commonly taught in practical English classes. We will, for example, see that the interpretation of tense is dependent on what is called the event structure or aktionsart of verbs; we will discuss the distinction and relation between tense and aspect; we will consider the pros and cons of calling the perfect either a tense or an aspect; we will discuss whether there is a future tense in English; and we will lay the foundation for an analysis of the meaning of the tenses in terms of the semantic principle of compositionality.

Registration via WUSEL during the official registration period is obligatory.
It is highly recommended that students complete module ANG-B1 first.
