Module Description: This STATA tutorial is basically aimed at all students of the Master Degree programs who wish or need to prepare their own empirical analyses, e.g. as part of their seminar papers or final theses. The participation in this course is strongly recommended to all participants of the course “Applied Econometrics”. Provided that there are sufficient capacities, all interested students of the Bachelor Degree programs are also welcome to attend this course.
The tutorial gives an introduction to the statistical software STATA, which is today one of the most frequently used programs for performing empirical analyses. It starts with an introduction to the basic handling and set-up of STATA and data management, e.g. how to import and edit data sets or how to create and manipulate variables.
Furthermore the general command syntax is explained, followed by basic programming techniques and the respective STATA commands. After this, the tutorial turns towards empirical data analysis, such as the creation of descriptive statistics and the application and implementation of econometric methods, e.g. the regression analysis, using STATA. Other aspects, such as the creation and export of tables and graphics are treated as well. The participation in the course “Refresher in basic Statistics and Econometrics” is strongly recommended for the topic of empirical data analysis, as the knowledge of the basic statistical / econometrical methods is assumed in the tutorial.
