Kommentar |
After the Second World War, the United States became a superpower; technological innovation and economic growth led to a standard of living unknown before in history. But whereas the dominant political discourse showed signs of triumphalism, dissenting voices criticised the complacency of the "Eisenhower era" (1953-61), the consumerism of the "affluent society" (John Kenneth Galbraith, The Affluent Society, 1958) and the conformity of the "lonely crowd" (David Riesman et al., The Lonely Crowd, 1950). In this course, we will read two classic novels of alienation, Ralph Ellison's Invisible Man (1952) and Sylvia Plath's The Bell Jar (published posthumously in 1963). A selection of Sylvia Plath's poetry will be made available in the form of handouts.
