Often regarded as an American invention, the short story has had a shaping influence on the development of American literature and continues to be one of the most prominent, popular, and versatile literary genres. After familiarizing ourselves with the history of the genre and theories of the short story, we will focus on sample readings of selected stories by twentieth-century writers such as Edith Wharton, Anzia Yezierka, Ernest Hemingway, Raymond Carver, Tim O'Brien, Edwidge Danticat, and Jhumpa Lahiri. We will use these stories to discuss a wide range of thematic concerns, including issues of gender and sexuality, class and social mobility, race and ethnic identity, marginalization and discrimination, as well as immigration. Our own critical readings of primary texts will be complemented and accompanied by selected secondary texts that reflect contemporary scholarship and a range of theoretical approaches.
