As Salman Rushdie writes in Imaginary Homelands, to migrate is "to lose language and home, to be defined by others, to become invisible, or, even worse, a target; it is to experience deep changes and wrenches in the soul" (210). However, it it is not solely the migrant who is transformed by this experience: s/he "also transforms" his or her "new world" (Rushdie 210). In this class, we will explore experiences of migration and immigration as represented in literary texts from approximately the early 20th century to the present. We will mainly focus on texts written by first- and second-generation immigrant writers from a variety of ethnic backgrounds and different parts of the world, but possibly also include experiences of internal migration as well as texts written by the descendants of those who were brought to North America by force. We will study the impact of such complex processes of transformations on individual subjects as well as communities, focusing on constructions of home(land) and belonging, identity and otherness, intercultural and generational conflicts, experiences of exile, diaspora, and border crossings, as well as on issues of gender, race, ethnicity, and language.

Please purchase a copy of Willa Cather's 1918 novel My Ántonia, preferably the 1995 Mariner Books edition (978-0395755143) or the 2018 Vintage Classics edition (978-0525562863). We will be discussing this novel from October 30 onward and you must have completed your first reading of the novel by then.
A second novel, which we will discuss in January 2019, will be announced in class.
You will need to obtain a physical copy (hardcover or paperback) of both novels. All other materials will be made available online or as mastercopies. |

Students who enroll in this class must be willing to engage in an international collaboration with a group of students from Worcester State University, which will take place during the first half of the semester and will involve some experimental teaching formats and forms of collaboration.
You will need to obtain a gmail account (which is for free) by October 20 in order to access shared class materials and to interact/collaborate with your fellow U.S. students through google classroom.
