This is a seminar for BA-students only.
Morphology is concerned with the systematic relationships between the forms and the meanings of lexemes. When the focus is on different grammatical meanings displayed by systematically related forms of a single lexeme, such as singular vs. plural (dog - dogs, table - tables etc.) or past vs. present tense (fill - filled, praise- praised etc.), it is common to speak of inflectional morphology. When the focus is on different lexical meanings displayed by systematically related forms of different lexemes, such as differences between play and player, teach and teacher etc. or between kind and unkind, faithful and unfaithful etc., it is common to speak of derivational morphology. Since English is rather poor as far as inflectional morphology is concerned, the greatest part of the seminar will be dealing with phenomena that fall within the domain of derivational morphology. We will also be discussing differences between the two major approaches to morphological theorising, the morpheme-based approach and the lexeme-based approach.
