Primary English has become an integral part of the curriculum at German primary schools, however, it is still subject to ongoing discussions and change. The development and the assessment of young students’ language skills have been the focus of various empirical studies in recent times.
The main aim of this course is to give students an insight into both theoretical and practical aspects of early language learning and teaching with a particular focus on the promotion of oracy and literacy skills. In the first part of the seminar we will deal with psycholinguistic foundations of listening, speaking, reading and writing processes and discuss some of the latest developments in the field of primary EFL. Following this, we will consider practical implications with regard to language learning tasks as well as teaching resources available for English teachers and learners at primary level.
