Traumatic events and their aftermaths abound in U.S. history and have been a ubiquitous topic in American literature and other forms of cultural representation such as graphic novels and film. And yet, the particular ways in which traumatic experiences impact the human psyche and the symptoms which such events cause, constitute a particular challenge to acts of representation. In this seminar, we will consider competing theories of trauma, including its (non-)representability and questions of coping as well as a range of representational strategies that have been used by twentieth-century and contemporary authors to depict traumatic events and the impact of traumatic experiences. The contexts we will focus on will include issues such as slavery, the Vietnam War, the holocaust, and 9/11. We will read texts by authors such as Toni Morrison, Tim O'Brien, and Cynthia Ozick and look at depictions of trauma in fiction, poetry, and graphic novels.
