This is a seminar for MEd- and MA-students only.
The study of information structure is concerned with the systematic aspects of how the lexico-grammatical form of sentences is adapted to the context in which they occur. For example, although the pair of sentences separated by '/' in (1) and (2) below can be said to express the same proposition, only the second sentence of the pair can be appropriately uttered in the context of the preceding sentence.
(1) At the party, I was introduced to a friend of Peter's. A friend of Peter's is a famous painter. / She is a famous painter.
(2) Both Liverpool and Chelsea had an away game. Man U was beaten 2:1 by Chelsea. / Chelsea beat Man U 2:1.
In this seminar, we will be examining what lexico-grammatical forms are sensitive to what contextual requirements in what way. Some of the prominent concepts that will be discussed are 'topic', 'focus' and 'given vs. new information'.
