It has been 400 years since the Mayflower set sail and arrived at Plymouth Rock on the American continent. The Mayflower has remained an emblem for the transatlantic journey because until the 20th century, people were dependent on ships for trade and migration between the continents. Thus it is no surprise that ships form a recurrent motif also in American literature. We shall analyze texts from William Bradford to Sarah Orne Jewett, in which ships play an important role and discuss them in their historical and literary contexts.
