This course serves as an introduction to Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL). We will study past and present approaches to foreign language teaching (FLT) as well as the cultural backgrounds of their development. We will also explore theories that describe and explain second language acquisition. Moreover, the Cognitive Sciences provide us with theories that try to explain what goes on “in our mind” when we understand or produce language. Finally, we will look at recent developments in educational policy like digitalisation and inclusion and sketch out how they affect today’s English language teaching.
We recommend that you attend this course in the same term as you attend the GLS Fachdidaktik.
Please note that if you are not present at the first meeting, you may lose your place in the course.
