In this class, we are going to look at American novels with adolescent protagonists. We’ll start with a classic, J. D. Salinger’s The Catcher in the Rye, and then concentrate on some recent novels – also popular at German schools – to see how and why protagonists reject certain social and moral trends in America, keeping in mind how very different life at school is in Germany, so that the American texts may also help us (and our future ‘teachees’) get on a higher level of intercultural competence.
Please note: There is a no screen policy in class.
